India was originally scheduled to host the G20 summit in 2021, followed by Italy in 2022. Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated at the 2018 G20 Buenos Aires summit that he had requested Italy to host the summit in 2021 and allowed India to host it in 2022, the 75th anniversary of India’s independence. Italy consented to allow India to host the 2022 G20 summit in its place due to the growth of bilateral ties.

In response to a request from Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi, India exchanged its G-20 presidency with Indonesia in 2023, when Indonesia will also preside over the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
