Context
Pollution in China
Only certain vehicles were allowed through the city in the days leading up to the G20 summit in Hangzhou; construction sites were halted; residents were given a week off (and encouraged to leave the city); and factories in the area, including over two hundred steel mills, were asked to halt production (to temporarily reduce air pollution).
Climate change
According to reports released on September 3, 2016, Barack Obama and Xi Jinping both said that their countries had ratified the Paris Agreement from the 2015 UN Climate Change Conference. This brought the total number of countries that have ratified the agreement to 26. [9] The US and China are responsible for 18% and 20% of the world’s carbon dioxide emissions, which are what cause global warming.
Economic statements
The major points of the summit’s final communiqué are as follows:

- Encourage cross-border trade and investment while vehemently opposing protectionism.
- Fiscal stimulus and new ideas can help the economy expand.
- Defending against “populist attacks” on internationalism.
- Improve assistance for those seeking refuge.
